The etymology of the name Spyros is not clear, but according to some theories it comes from the word “spiris”, which means basket or case, or Latin spiritus meaning "spirit". Of Greek origin it is derived from the name Spyridon, of which the most notable reference is to Saint Spyridon a 4th-century shepherd who is know for his faith and great piety.
