360 SILHOUETTES SIDE BY SIDE IN A CIRCLE

Over the years I have developed a lecture concerned with creating Figurative Sculpture in Water-Based Clay.

The Power Point presentation is designed specifically for Figurative Sculptors & speaks to both beginners and accomplished artists.

THE LECTURE

The basis of the technique, originally developed by the Greeks, consists of reducing the image of the figure to a silhouette and using these simplified outlines to create a clay representation by placing many silhouettes side by side in a circle.

The importance and process involved in taking measures is explained, including how to take these measures and the resulting effects that this has on the figure.

The calculation of proportions and methods of applying these measures is discussed, including different methods of altering the proportions and adjusting the sculpture for technical as well as aesthetics concerns.

Details are included covering the different techniques of modelling the various parts of the figure and the use of tools. The course will also include techniques of working with the model and the construction of supports to assist the model in holding the pose.

The aesthetics of sculpting the figure are only briefly considered with the use of the Sine curve in the work, the use of abstraction within the figure, as well as how to create drapery and the use of oil based clay for certain areas of construction.

The lecture finishes with a question period.
